Late confirmation statements at companies house
Companies House data is changing. The way we interpret it needs to change too.
The Financial Times reports today that 56,710 active UK companies had confirmation statements between one and 12 months overdue in September, up 139% year on year. The rise follows compulsory director identity verification.
Companies House now requires all directors to be verified before a company can file its confirmation statement. That changes what an overdue filing may tell us.Overdue accounts and overdue confirmation statements are different signals.
Confirmation-statement lateness may reflect identity-verification or compliance difficulties, alongside other possible causes. It should not automatically be interpreted as financial distress or evidence of fraud.
For anyone assessing customers, suppliers or business partners, this matters. A familiar data field can take on a different meaning when the rules behind it change.Keeping up means understanding both what the register shows and why it shows it. Otherwise, we risk applying yesterday’s assumptions to today’s information.
